Flashguns – „Passions Of A Different Kind“

Sie haben am Sonntag, 11. Dezember 2011 ihre Trennung mit dem Wunsch nach musikalischer Weiterentwicklung bekanntgegeben. Doch ihr zwei Monate vorher erschienenes Debütalbum „Passions Of A Different Kind“ sollte man deswegen keineswegs unbeachtet lassen. Flashguns sind drei Londoner, alle Anfang 20, die 2010 nach Deutschland kamen um ihr Glück, vielmehr ihren Erfolg zu finden. Bei Humming Records, einem kleinen Label aus Berlin, stießen sie auf die richtigen Leute dafür und waren schon bevor überhaupt ihr Album veröffentlicht wurde, der Geheimtipp auf Festivals mit Fans, die jedes Lied mitsingen konnten.

Sam Felix Johnston (Gesang & Gitarre), Olly Scanlon (Bass) und Giles Robinson (Schlagzeug), die sich bereits zu Schulzeiten kennenlernten, veröffentlichten 2009 in England ihre EP „Matching Hearts, Similar Parts“. Ein Jahr später erschien diese in Deutschland. Ausverkaufte Konzerte und Festivals folgten. Und stets klangen Worte wie „Geheimtipp“ oder „Indie-Sensation“ mit, wenn Kritiker über die drei Briten berichteten.

„Passions Of A Different Kind“, langersehnt am 14. Oktober 2011 erschienen, ist ein Album wie man es sich wünscht. Es ist ehrlich, rau, gefühlvoll und bleibt sich in jedem Titel treu. Teilweise aufgenommen in einer Scheune während eines kalten, englischen Winters, verarbeitet Sänger Sam eigene Erfahrungen:

I was becoming an adult, finding out what life and love was about, just experiencing everything a teenager goes through in my own weird way. The album is a part of me from that time in my life.

So geht es in „Passions Of A Different Kind“, dem 2. Song des Albums, der nach dem extrem rauen „Sounds Of The Forrest“ eher verspielt wirkt, um’s Verlieben und darum, dass es jedes Mal eine neue Erfahung ist. Man kann mit den Titeln regelrecht Sams Gefühlsregungen nachvollziehen, denn auch der darauffolgende Song „No Point Hanging Around“ handelt davon, ein Mädchen zu lieben.

Stets ist es seine Stimme, die jeden einzelnen Titel zu etwas besonderem und vor allem ehrlichen macht. Für die drei ruhigeren Titel „The Beginning“, „Heat & Fire“ und „Racing Race“ sollte man eigentlich nicht versuchen Worte zu finden. „The Beginning“ überrascht mit einem tief, bluesigem Bass und einem fast epischen Arrangement, welches die depressive Stimmung zur Spitze treibt. „Heat & Fire“ ist die typische Ballade auf „Passions Of A Different Kind“. Gezupfte Gitarren, Sams Stimme und fast eine Minute ohne Drums machen auch diesen zu einem ganz besonderen Moment. Spätestens bei „Racing Race“, dem letzten Lied, sollte einem bewusst geworden sein, dass dieses Album wohl eines der einzigartigsten Debütalben des Jahres ist. „Racing Race“ ist der einzige Song, den sie von ihren früheren Konzerten mit auf das Album genommen haben. Sieben Minuten lang, fast epochal, entdeckt man, dass hier nicht nur mehr Indie gespielt wird.

Auf „Passions Of A Different Kind“ findet man eine erfrischend neue Mischung aus Bluesrock, Alternative und Indie. Jedem sei diese Platte ans Herz gelegt, sowie auch ihr Abschiedskonzert am 4. Februar in Berlin. Wir sind gespannt, was man von Sam, Olly oder Giles in Zukunft hören wird.

On Sunday, 11 December 2011, they announced their break-up with the wish for further musical development. Still, their debut album „Passions Of A Different Kind“, released two months before, should not be left unnoticed. Flashguns are three Londoners, all in the beginnings of their 20s, who came to Germany in 2010 to find luck, or rather success. With Humming Records, a small Berlin label, they came across the right people. Just before the release of their album, they became an insider’s tip on festivals with fans that were able to sing along every song.

In 2009, Sam Felix Johnston (vocals & guitar), Olly Scanlon (bass) and Giles Robinson (drums), who already met in school, published their EP “Matching Hearts, Similar Parts” in England. It was released in Germany one year later. Sold out concerts and festivals followed. And at all times, words like “insider’s tip” and “indie-sensation” were contained associations by critics writing about the three Brits.

“Passions Of A Different Kind”, published long-awaited on October, 14 2011, is an album as one would wish. It is honest, rough, emotional and remains faithful in every song. Partly recorded in a barn during a cold English winter, singer Sam comes to terms with his own experiences:

So, the second song “Passions Of A Different Kind”, that appears rather cheerful in comparison to the rough “Sounds Of The Forrest”, is about falling in love and making new experiences. In the tracks you can relive Sam’s feelings – “No Point Of Hanging Around” is another example for his honesty in terms of loving a woman and the strength you gain through it.

It is always his voice that makes each song a special one. For the three slower songs „The Beginning“, „Heat & Fire“ and „Racing Race“ you should not even try to find words to describe them. „The Beginning“ surprises with a deep, blousy bass and an almost epic arrangement that carries the depressive mood to its extremes. “Heat & Fire” is the typical ballad on “Passions Of A Different Kind”. Plucked guitars, Sam’s voice and almost a minute without drums do make even this moment special. With “Racing Race” at the latest, one should realise this debut album is one of the most exceptional of the year. “Racing Race” is the only song they played in their former concerts that found its way on the album. Being seven minutes long and almost epochal, you notice this is not only indie that is played here.

A refreshing new mixture between blues rock, alternative and indie can be found on “Passions Of A Different Kind”. We recommend this record to everyone, as well as their farewell concert on Februar 4, 2012 in Berlin. We are excited about what we will hear from Sam, Olly and Giles in future.
